We invite applications for a postdoctoral researcher position at the Institute of Archaeology, Faculty of Historical Sciences, Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw (UKSW) .

The competition is open to persons who meet the conditions set out in the Act on Higher Education and Science of July 20, 2018 (Journal of Laws of 2022, item 574 as amended), Resolution of the NCN Council No. 65/2019 of June 13, 2019). A person to be employed as a postdoc should have obtained their PhD within the past 7 years.

Project title: “Mesopotamian material religion: Shifting landscapes of human-divine networks in ancient Mesopotamia”

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in archaeology or humanities, in Ancient Near Eastern studies, (Mesopotamian) archaeology, anthropology of religion. The successful candidate should have obtained their PhD degree by the 30th of November 2023 and no more than 7 years before the deadline for applications. For periods of leave excluded from these 7 years, please consult the NCN regulations above.
  • research experience in terms of data gathering and analysis confirmed by relevant publications or teaching experience
  • research experience and interest in the field of Mesopotamia, religion, materiality, sacred spaces, dedicated objects in antiquity, and/or landscape archaeology confirmed by participation in scientific projects and/or publications in monographs, edited volumes or in international journals
  • very good knowledge of English
  • organizational experience, e.g. obtaining grants, organization of conferences, symposia and scientific workshops
  • ability to work independently and as a part of the team

Tasks description:

The postdoc will be responsible for data collection of uninscribed dedicatory objects and analysis of sacred spaces and their distribution in Greater Mesopotamia during the 3rd-1st millennium BCE. They will participate in museum field trips and will give talks and papers to disseminate and communicate their research results. They will also contribute to the publication of the research results. The postdoc will also assist in the designing of the research tools together with the PI and building on the theoretical and methodological frameworks of the project. The research interests of the postdoctoral researcher should be closely linked to the project theme. They should be a team-player and willing to support the PhD student(s) as well as take an active part in the scientific life of the Institute of Archaeology. The postdoctoral researcher will report to Ass. Prof. Dr Christina Tsouparopoulou, the PrincipaI Investigator of the project.

Project description: 

The project focuses on highlighting the lived experience of religion of the multi-cultural and multi-ethnic communities of historic Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq, NE Syria & neighbouring regions) throughout three millennia (3000-539BC). It aims to highlight the effect of the tempo-spatial diversity of religious practice; explore how different individuals communicated with the divine through material culture and sacred space; investigate how dedications relate to broader socio-political events, and consequently generate a comprehensive history of religious dedicatory practice in the long historical Mesopotamian trajectory.

  • PDF copy of 1 publication in English (this could also be a chapter from the PhD thesis)
