Routine, Illness, Metaphor: Framing Childbirth Figurines on Hellenistic Cyprus

Childbirth is far more than the simple, biological act of giving birth. It is an event with a great impact on individuals and communities, surrounded by an elaborate, culturally-determined web of meanings. This web is very difficult to grasp archaeologically, since it leaves few material traces. An exception on the island of Cyprus is a remarkable corpus of stone and terracotta figurine groups depicting women giving birth, dedicated in various sanctuaries. They demonstrate that the ancient Cypriots thought about and dealt with childbirth in a variety of sophisticated ways, and that they used the image of birth as an extraordinarily powerful symbol. In this presentation, we will look at some of these figurine groups, and examine how they may be used as gateways for accessing this expansive web of meaning, where childbirth draws together different ideas about family, community, survival, relationships with the divine, and the social and animal world around us.
